A Kenyan is on the list of the 14 people that are going to receive a White House honour today- a recognition in President Obama’s program, Champions of Change. Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg will be among the people receiving this award for their hard work in building stronger neighbourhoods in communities, and for mobilising networks across borders to address global challenges.
Dr. Wanjiru is the Founder and Executive Director of Akili Dada, a leadership incubator investing in high-achieving young African women from underprivileged backgrounds with a demonstrated passion for social change. She holds a Ph. D in Political Science, and is an assistant professor in the University of San Francisco. Her work in the university centres on politics of philanthropy, gender, Africa, ethnicity, and democratization and on the role of technology in social activism.
The program is part of President Obama’s Winning the Future Initiative. It highlights differently sectors each week, identifying groups of champions for the work they are doing to serve and strengthen their communities.
